Welcome to the Houses of Healing. The title of this site refers to one of my favorite pieces of literature, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book has always been a great source of wonder, joy, and inspiration to me. The Houses of Healing or HOH is somewhat of a medical facility in Middle-earth.
Faramir and Eowyn find comfort in a garden of the Houses of Healing.
In Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, the Houses of Healing are located in the white city of Minas Tirith. HOH is located on the sixth tier, surrounded by gardens, lawns, and trees. It is here that the Warden of Healers and herbalists such as Ioreth tend to the sick and wounded.
During the War of the Ring, Faramir, Eowyn, and Merry Brandybuck were all wounded and overcome by the black breath of the Nazgul. It is in the Houses of Healing that the hands of the healer identified Aragorn as King. With the help of Ioreth, Aragorn used the athelas weed to heal the three patients.
Aragorn departed the white city and led the Host of the West to the Black Gate to confront the forces of Sauron. Eowyn in despair longed to accompany Aragorn to the Black Gate, but was forbidden to leave the Houses of Healing by the Warden. Under Faramir's instructions she was allowed leave to walk in the garden so that she could gaze eastward towards the Anduin and beyond to the land of Mordor. It was from this garden balcony that Faramir and Eowyn watched as Sauron's shadow departed Mordor, and thus, ended the War of the Ring.
It was in the Gardens of the Houses of Healing that Faramir fell in love with the lovely Eowyn. She still struggled with her feelings for Aragorn, but soon realized and accepted her growing affection for Faramir.
After the Ring was destroyed, the young hobbit, Merry Brandybuck was reunited with his friends, Pippin Took, Samwise Gamgee, and Frodo Baggins in the Houses of Healing.
