I don't intend to make this into a LOTR site, but I did think it was important to mention this young man. He was 16 years old when he met Peter Jackson, the New Zealand director responsible for the Lord of the Rings movies. Cameron was already a talented, amateur film maker. He had won awards for his work. He became friends with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. Many people do not realize that the Academy award winning song from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was inspired by 17 year old Cameron Duncan.
Here is his website, which also includes a timeline of his battle with osteosarcoma. Cameron died before he ever got to see the movie, Return of the King. Peter Jackson was so impressed with the work of this young film maker that he devoted an entire section of the Special Edition CD for Cameron's short films. And, for one so young, they are remarkable. His final film '"Strikezone" used his love of softball as a medium about his fight battle with cancer. The short film is included in its entirety on the CD.

You can listen to the song performed by Annie Lennox at the official soundtrack site and watch a behind the scenes look at the making of the song. Fran Walsh dedicated this song to Cameron and stated that she wrote the words with him in mind:

Here are the lyrics to the 2003 Oscar winning song, written by
Fran Walsh, composer Howard Shore, and Annie Lennox.
Into the West
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
Dream -- of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across a distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home
Dawn will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home
And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
